Crane - 1894

Grus communis

Mr. H. W. Evans, of Harbour House, Solva, possesses a very fine example, an adult in full plumage, of this rare occasional visitor to the British Islands, where, in ancient days, it was a regular summer migrant to the eastern counties. This specimen was captured April 28, 1893, on Vachelich Farm, between Solva and St. David's, and we have been informed by Mr. Evans that it weighed 11 3/4 lbs. in the meat, and measured 6 ft. 9 in. across the extended wings from tip to tip. "It had been seen on Clegyr Issaf Farm some days before, and was in grand plumage and condition." Mr. Evans justly regards this beautiful bird as the prize in his collection of British birds.
