Goosander - 1980s winter atlas

The BTO winter atlas showed the 10km squares where Goosanders were recorded during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents 4-10 birds seen in a day.

Goldeneye - 1980s winter atlas

The BTO winter atlas showed that Goldeneyes were present in both estuarine and fresh water 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square, the darkest blue represents over 27 birds, with up to 47 recorded in SM 91.

Gadwall - 1980s BTO winter atlas

 

 

The BTO winter atlas showed that Gadwalls were present in both estuarine and fresh water 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

 

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square, the darkest blue represents over 23 birds.

Feral Pigeon - 1980s winter atlas

The BTO winter atlas showed that Feral Pigeons were present in most 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents over 115 birds.

However, it should be noted that the figures show a high correlation with the number of recording cards returned (therefore related to recording effort) for each 10km square.

The BTO winter atlas showed that Dunnocks were present in all 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents over 24 birds.

However, it should be noted that the figures show a high correlation with the number of recording cards returned (therefore related to recording effort) for each 10km square.

Dunlin - 1980s winter atlas

The BTO winter atlas showed that Dunlins were present in several coastal and estuarine 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents over 900 birds.

The distribution is consistent with the Birds of the Estuary Enquiry (BoEE, now WeBS) at that time, with the majority of birds in the inland parts of the Cleddau Estuary complex.The Nevern and Teifi estuaries provided the main wintering grounds in the north of the county.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents over 4 birds.

 

The map indicates wintering outside the breeding range in SM 81.

The BTO winter atlas showed that Curlews were present in most 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square, the darkest blue represents over 210 birds.

The distribution is consistent with the Birds of the Estuary Enquiry (BoEE, now WeBS) at that time, with the majority of birds in the Cleddau Estuary complex. The Nevern and Teifi estuaries provided most winter records in the north of the county.

Coot - 1980s winter atlas

The BTO winter atlas showed that Coots were present in most 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents over 119 birds, up to 300 being noted at Bosherston.

Common Scoter - 1980s winter atlas

The BTO winter atlas showed that Common Scoters were present in a few coastal and estuarine 10km squares during the winters of 1981-82, 1982-82 and 1983-84.

The darker the colour, the higher the relative total count for each 10km square.  The darkest blue represents more than 96 birds. Up to 420 were recorded in St Bride’s Bay (SM 81 & 82) and 650 off Amroth (SN 10) during this period.
