Pied Flycatcher

Muscicapa lypoleuca hypoleuca

Passage migrant in small numbers chiefly on the islands, but males heard singing two years (1941 -2) at Nevern.  No nests found.

Muscicapa striata striata

Common but not numerous summer visitor, scarcer as a breeder on the west coast.  On the islands a regular but not numerous passage migrant.

Red-Backed Shrike - 1949 status

Lanius collurio collurio

Irregular visitor.  Methew records nests at Black Rock (annually) and at Tenby (21 June 1887).  Has bred Pembroke 1924, Angle 1908.  Also at Pembroke Dock (G.Haines), Orielton (C.W.Macworth-Praed) and in the north of the count (T.Ground B.Birds XVIII 232).  Recorded occasionally Skokholm.

Mathew records oen killed "some years ago" at Wolfsdale in the parish of Camrose.  One at Newport, 7 Jan 1946 (R.M.L.)

Common resident in woods and copses even in the extreme west.  Some diminution after winter 1946/47, but still fairly common 1948.

British Willow Tit - 1949 status

Parus atricapillus keinschmidti

Unknown in Mathew's day.  The only records are of a nest near Haverfordwest in 1925 (W.M.Congreve British Birds XIX,96), and one singing Clarbeston 8 Aug 1939 (Bertram Lloyd, British Birds XXXIV, 221).

Common resident.  Marked westward movement in late autumn when crosses to Skomer and Ramsey, but not Skokholm and Grassholm.
