Tree Sparrow - 1949 status

Passer montanus montanus

Two Marloes 21 Oct 1933, one Skokholm 15 May 1934, 6 May 1938 and 20 May 1947 (R.M.L.).  One daily at a rubbish-tip, Fishguard, Jan 1935 (Bertram Lloyd)

House Sparrow - 1949 status

Passer domesticus domesticus

Not numerous, and is absent from whole villages, though present in small numbers in all large villages and towns.  Fluctuates and does not appear to increase permanently.  Has bred Caldey and Ramsey, but casual on other islands.

Snow Bunting - 1949 status

Plectrophenax nivalis nivalis

Recorded near Fishguard, 1859; at Smalls Lighthouse, 17 Oct 1884.  Regular visitor Skokholm, Oct - Nov, but only once seen in spring.  Others records: Solva Oct 1894, Feb 1912, Boulston 1906, Feb 1911. St Ann's Head 17 April 1914.

Lapland Bunting - 1949 status

Calcarius lapponicus lapponicus

Two Skokholm 5/12 Sept 1936 are the first Welsh records.  Both immature.  One was secured and identification confirmed by H.F.Witherby.  Adult male seen Skokholm, 10 May 1948 (P.Conder and J.Keighley)

Reed Bunting - 1949 status

Emberiza schoeniclus schoeniclus

Scarce resident.  Pairs thinly scattered about waste bogs, especially St Davids area and in the hills.  Wandering in winter, when it has visited Skokholm.

Cirl Bunting - 1949 status

Emberiza cirlus cirlus

Apart from a very small colony near Solva, a rare straggler.  Described by Mathew as a rare occasional visitor.  first record of breeding in 1895 in solva and Haverfordwest districts (H.W.Evans). None recorded in 1948

Extremely common resident, does not breed Skomer or Skokholm, but visits these islands.

Corn Bunting - 1949 status

Emberiza calandra

Resident but very local and confined prinicapally to St Davids area, Dale peninsular and Castlemartin district.  Probably decreasing.  Breeds, or has bred, on Ramsey.  Two singing there 28 June 1927 (Bertram Lloyd).

Brambling - 1949 status

Fringilla monifringilla

Regular winter visitor to the whole coast with Chafinches from October onwards, and can usually be found among the large flocks of finches about farm yards and stacks.  Occasional Skokholm and Skomer.  Described by Mathew as a rare and irregular winter visitor.  Seldom recorded before 1930.

British Chaffinch - 1949 status

Fringilla coelebs gengleri

Abundant flocks arrive in October, coming down over Cardigan Bay from the north-west; tens of thousands then strike the northern and western coasts of the county.  Ringed individuals trapped in Pembrokeshire in winter have been recovered subsequently in Belgium.  It is, there, probable that these winter flocks include representatives of the Continental race F.c.coelebs.

Common Crossbill - 1949 status

Loxia curvirostra curvirosta

Mathew gives two records: Angle, 1858; Stackpole Court and elsewhere 1868.  A female, Skokholm, 5 July 1929 (R.M.L.). Small parties seen in the Fishguard district, Aug-Sept, 1930; one, Rosebush 28 Aug 1930; and several St Davids, 3 Sept, 1930 (Bertram LLoyd).
