British Nuthatch - 1949 status

Sitta europaea affinis

Mathew recorded only one, shot at Slebech, 7 Sept 1893.  W.M.Congreve saw it at Picton and Saundersfoot in 1908.  Now common in all wooded areas as a breeder, and wanders to small woods in sheltered valleys in exposed areas out of breeding season, eg Dinas Island and St Brides.

Common resident.  Three times recorded Skokholm: 26 July 1928, 8 Nov 1930, 12-23 July 1938

Pied Wagtail - 1949 status

Motacilla alba yarrellii

Numerous breeder, and nesting on most islands (Ramsey, Skomer, Skokholm, Caldey, not Grassholm).  Roost of 600-1000 in gorse at Martletwy, Jan-March 1935.  Also regular and numberous autumn passage migrant.

Motacilla cinerea cinerea

Common resident on all fast-moving streams even close to the sea.  Irregular visitors to the island. Numbers fluctuate somewhat.

Meadow Pipit - 1949 status

Anthus pratensis

Common resident, including the islands (except Grassholm).  Abundant on spring passage late Feb - end of March and in autumn (Aug - Oct).  Least numberous Dec - Jan.

Tree Pipit - 1949 status

Anthus trivialis trivialis

Fairly common summer resident, but not breeding on exposed western coast.  Breeds in the wooded Cleddau valeys, including Benton Woods.  More numerous in the easern hills.  Scarce on passage on the islands.

Wood-lark - 1949 status

Lullula arborea arborea

Widely distributed througout county as a breeder, but scarcest in extreme west, though breeds sparsely in Castlemartin peninsula.  Most numerous in east and north-east.  In Crymmych area about as common as Sky-lark.  Has bred several times on Dinas Island.
