Turnstone - 1949

Arenaria interpres interpres

Mathew considered it a rather rare autumn visitor to the coast, and knew of no spring record.  It is now to be seen on the coasts and islands at all times of the year, and even in full breeding plumage, though the majority of the numerous midsummer records are of immature birds.  Usually in small parties in summer, but large flocks have been seen in autumn (100-200 at mouth of Teifi estuary, by T.Ground, 5 Sept 1913, and winter (R.M.L. saw 120-150 at Goodwick, 29/31 Jan 1948).

Woodcock - 1949

Scolopax rusticola

A common winter visitor, especially in hard weather.  In 1603 almost incredibly abundant, but has decreased since, and is probably still decreasing.  Mathew believed it bred in small numbers, and Wintle thought it bred on Caldey.  Alexander (1945) was given no definite evidence of breeding in the county, though a pair, evidently mating, were at Orielton 28 Feb 1935 (H.A.Gilbert).  Among good covers mentioned by Mathew are Sealyham, Cuffern, Tregwynt, near Tufton Arms, Trecwm, Stone Hall, and (especially) Slebech; to which this species still resorts.

Common Curlew - 1949

Numenius arquata arquata

Mathew had "little doubt" that it nested on Prescelly Mountain, and also "occasionally" on Skomer.  It is an abundant visitor to the coasts, especially in autumn and winter.  Before the early 1930s it was not common as a breeder, but it has greatly increased and now nests throughout the county, except the Castlemartin peninsula.  Large flocks resort to the islands during the moult, and it breeds frequently Skomer and Ramsey.  Most numerous as a breeder in the mountainous northern half of the county.
